Forgiveness and marital quality: Precursor or consequence in well-established relationships?
نویسندگان
چکیده
To examine potential causal relations between forgiveness and marital quality a sample of married couples (N1⁄4 91) provided data regarding forgiveness and marital quality on two occasions separated by a 12-month interval. Structural equation modeling was used to examine direction of effects. For women, paths emerged from forgiveness to marital quality and vice versa. For men, the direction of effect was from marital quality to forgiveness. The concurrent association between the two constructs mediated the longitudinal relationship between them for wives but not for husbands. These results are discussed in relation to an emerging body of theory and research on the role of forgiveness in marriage.

Three studies involving 328 married couples were conducted to validate the Marital Offence-Specific Forgiveness Scale, a new measure assessing offence-specific forgiveness for marital transgressions. The studies examined the dimensionality; internal consistency; and discriminant, concurrent, and predictive validity of the new measure. The final scale comprised 2 distinct correlated dimensions, ...

Italian husbands (n = 79) and wives (n = 92) from long-term marriages provided data on the role of marital quality, affective reactions, and attributions for hypothetical partner transgressions in promoting forgiveness. Structural equation modeling revealed that, as hypothesized, positive marital quality was predictive of more benign attributions that, in turn, facilitated forgiveness both dire...

Close relationships meet our deepest affiliative needs but also give rise to our deepest hurts. It is therefore not unusual for a clinician to encounter a client who feels “wronged,” “let down,” “betrayed,” or “hurt” by a spouse or family member. Such clients typically are experiencing negativity (involving resentment-based motivation, cognition, and emotion) toward the transgressor and are mot...
متن کاملNegotiating Forgiveness in Nonvoluntary Family Relationships
This study examined the ways in which individuals communicatively negotiate the process of forgiveness in nonvoluntary (family) relationships. Drawing from relational dialectics theory (RDT) as well as other dialogic perspectives on forgiveness (e.g., Waldron & Kelley, 2008), we examined the complexity of communicating forgiveness in nonvoluntary relationships. Participants’ experiences support...
